Gene, have a look at this page;
http://weightloss.about.com/od/obesityhealth/a/blexcessskin.htm

Basically if it has been more than two years since your weight loss and if you have maintained the low body fat % throughout that time but you still have the lose skin you may want to speak to a plastic surgeon.

Actually I think Brad Pilon's book on how much protein covers all of this as far as protein & eating for gaining muscle.

Weight 70kg, Height 6 ft

I am eating 2800 calories a day and my weight is not increasing after 40 days intense working out 4 times a week. Some days I have to eat 3000 just to stop it dropping below 70kg.

Could this be due to the calories not being high enough? Or are calories never the issue if they are enough to get you through your workout?

Nice post, I get that for getting bigger muscles you need to workout but I am interest in know what can help me to lift more weight/reps/sets etc, my point if lifting more gives you more muscles then what can I do (besides the workout) to improve the lifting?

Great response!

It's getting a little crazy with the angle that many "fitness experts" are using. I can't believe that I'm actually seeing claims that you can spot reduce by simply performing a certain style of workout.

i always eat for the lean body weight that i want to be. so say if i started at 160 lean and wanted to get to 170 lean i would take it in 2-3lb increments so that would be 163 x1 gram protein per lb then when i reached that weight i would go to 166 or so x 1g protein etc until i reached 170 lean. there would be no sense for me to eat for my overall bodyweight because my goal isnt to maintain that amount of fat and muscle. its to increase muscle. if i am overweight i obviously dont need more of what i am eating i need less. so there is no point in eating for what i am being overweight. i would want to eat for what my lbm goals would be because thats what we all measure ourselves by. we take bodyfat tests to see how lean we are. so why would people take a bodyfat test just to eat for there total fat and lbm weight? all that 2grams per lb of total weight is for guys on drugs who burn tons of calories and have huge amounts of muscle. being 250lbs at 4% bodyfat is different than your natural guy who weighs 200lbs at 10% bodyfat. but again its all about marketing in the magazines to sell. people want the quick way. they know for a fact these guys are on steroids but still think they can get like them naturally by the perfect diet, the perfect supplements, and the most hardcore training routine they can find. but we all know it doesnt work. people can do this for 10 years and not even be halfway to where they want but they are still buying the magazines and looking for the new supplement every month with the biggest mr o sponsor. people are lazy and stupid and its never going to get better. people will know the answer and still not follow it because they want it now and dont want to work for it. to bad you cant steal a good body eh? or can you? haha jk jk

Great post!By the way, how does this apply to ectomorph? They are genetically thin and have a higher metabolic rate so how does this apply to them? I have friends who are ectomorph and doing weights but really dont see any gain in size, so in terms of diet, how do we help a ectomorph put on significant muscle gain?

Thanks !!

I think there is alot of confusion about the amount of protein needed. I think its alot less than most people think. I read recently that if you eat too much protein it turns to sugar in your bloodstream. Its apperently also very ageing and worse than any sunbed

Hi,

Based on current research, it appears that the protein requirements for heavy resistance training are between 1.5 and 2.0 g / kg of bodyweight, assuming that caloric intake and protein quality are adequate.
(Lemon, P.W.R. Effects of exercice on dietary protein requirements. Int J Sports Nutr 8:426-447. 1998)

I agree about the comment on lean mass, that one should reduce the amount of protein if he is very fat (should take his % fat anyway)

My question is Do you think that this formula is accurate or not?

Thank you

Thanks John :)

But that means if you're in a calorie dificit and lifting weights you will be able to burn fat AND build muscle? Because the muscles can take what it needs to grow from the fat stores?

Klund,

Eating at energy balance (BMR + daily activity) will maintain your bodyfat levels. The muscle building process is slow and there is no evidence that it takes any caloric surplus. Even if there is an extra energy requirement to 'build' muscle it would be readily available from bodyfat stores. So no matter what the case is there is always enough energy on your body to build muscle without being in a calorie surplus.

The surplus concept just comes from bodybuilding 'bulking' lore that is not grounded with any science.

I cant understand that you would be able to gain muscle just eating at your BMR-level. If you BMR is 2000, above that you gain you say, and below that puts you in a dificit. But people would have to be completely inactive to not burn any more calories than what their BMR requires.
I cycle 15km each day, go shopping, meating friends, lifting weights.
I dont know exactly how much these activity burns. But i know that they put my energy expenditure up higher. My BMR is 1650cal. Lets say i burn up 2600cal in a day. Then i would have to be eating 2600cal a day to gain muscle?

Hope Im not totally wrong.. Im just confused. So please explain :)

I guess what it comes down to is what type of build you want. This AI index is par with staying
super lean and muscular with as little BMI as possible. Lean is in now, bulky is out. I like to study the originals, Reg Park, Steve Reeves. They had simple winning formulas and looked great. Thanks for having a forum to share information.
Really cool.

I went from 190lbs to 230lbs. in six months of
high calorie really healthy foods. I kept it as clean as possible. Ate about 4000 calories a day and gained quite a bit of fat. Excess calories no matter how clean will add fat. I now have to get rid of my man boobs.lol.Experimenting with your nutrition will give you huge results in the gym.Remember the saying "you are what you eat."
