Working out and dieting might be two of the only true experiments anyone will ever be involved in. This is interesting because you are both the experimenter and the subject.
Most bodybuilders and fitness competitors have embraced the concept that their body is their ongoing experiment. They try new programs, chart their progress and make changes along the way. This isn’t much different from how a real clinical trial would be performed.
The only difference is that a real clinical trial ends within a few weeks or months. But your experiment with your body will last a lifetime so it’s in your best interest to become a good scientist with your own body.
In this podcast we’ll discuss the concept of you being your own experiment of one.
We’ll talk about the difference between a prospective vs retrospective research and why you should do more of the former.
We’ll also discuss the concept of jumping in and getting your experiment going.
In the spirit of this podcast I just did a mini experiment over the past 5 days and here are a few pics I took at the end of it. You can do whatever you want with your experiment. Just give something a try, track your progress, evaluate it, make adjustments and then get back to work.

Based on your log data, and assuming you took this immediately at the end of the experiment, I will guess you’re somewhere between 170-175
What’s your AI in these photos John?
Anthony,
This is me at a 1.6 AI
JB
are you going to keep leaning out considering if you begin normal eating you’ll probably regain water weight
Anthony,
Yeah I’m going back to eating at slightly below BMR for another month or so and see where I end up.
JB
So this amount of muscle is possible without steroids?
Yes it’s possible for someone who has a similar somatotype (I’d say I’m a pretty average mesomorph)
Your back looks great. Are you trying to get rid of that last bit of belly fat? Looks like you have some love handles also. Can you ever get rid of that and see you abs?
Dave,
Yeah from here on in I’m just working on getting rid of that last 3-4 pounds.
JB
yeah you are really solid, just imagine how solid your gonna look when you lose that tiny bit of fat left! Good work and loving the site so far. Hope I can get close to the 1.6 you have by the end of the 12 weeks.
Are the ladies all over you now John?
looking good hope the bodyfat drops somemore………. how much kcals you getting daily??
John,
I think you look fine. Unless you’re getting ready for a photo shoot or a contest, I would forget trying to get any leaner. I’d like to see photos of these people who are suggesting that you lose more fat. Keep up the good work. By the way, what was your experiment?
Great job John, looking good. But with all this continuous exercising over the next 30 years let’s say, what will be the toll on our joints?
Thanks,
J.
Were you ever at the point when your abs were visible?
Your back is great!!! How did you build it?
Not quite to the point of visible abs during this cut down so far. First goal was just the 1.6 AI ratio. Gonna go a bit further now for the abs too and see what my measurements end up at. Will report in with those pics and measurements in the next month or so.
JB
So from what i understand you have been working out for over 15 years just to get to the 1.6AI ratio? Am i right? This looks like a very long journey?
Bart,
No it didn’t take 15 years…that would be depressing. Over the past 15 years I trained with a powerlifting team for 2 years, with bodybuilders, as a strength and conditioning coach and I even took up running for a little while! (what was I thinking!)…My bodyweight went as high as 250lbs and as low as 185lbs throughout those years…
I only conceived of the Adonis Index system less than 2 years ago and have been training on it ever since…hit 1.6 AI at the end of last year.
I’m currently testing and building advanced levels of the system so that is how I currently train.
JB
That make sense. I started to train 3 years ago and I must say that i did not get even 20% of the results you got. I started at age of 32 with weight around 181 pounds. (before that i was 210 and i lost that fat through swimming and food restriction) After committing to different programs (i did six pack abs program by Arel, then i did 4 programs by Craig Ballentine, and then I did twice the Muscle Explosion by Nick Nilsson)and very restricting and healthy eating i still look at the mirror and look bad with some love handles and some belly fat. My weight is now 171 and currently i am doing Metabolic Surge program by Nick Nilsson, but I feel like am in one big plateau state. How do you exercise so you could build such impressive body?
Do you use adonis workouts and how would they different from other stuff that is out here?
So I take it you don’t jog, John? I loathe jogging. Always have.
