Maybe true for someone just starting out... However... Someone with a good base (and a good deal of bodyfat) I would never recommend dropping cardio. Some people NEED to do cardio to develop optimal "AI" especially if you want the small waist big shoulder appearance. You can get away with dropping cardio if your diet is 100% on point, but I doubt that is the case for

I think cardio is getting too much of a bad reputation. To my mind, weight training is essential but cardio can improve your endurance condition and is benefitial for the heart. This means that optimally you would want to do weight circuit training PLUS cardio (e.g., hitting the gym in the morning, going for a run in the evening). I think this would also strengthen the fat loss power of weight training. I wouldn't give up cardio completely if I have time to do both.

Ultimately, it's going to depend on your conditioning.

If you're conditioned for that work load, then you should be able to achieve both.

You'll know if the amount you're lifting isn't going up.

Lyle's protocol is fine. I have the book in front of me. His recos don't go far from our own.

(The original Adonis workouts called for 2 interval sessions per week)

Lyle says 1 -2 depending on your other work load (but ideally don't do them in the same session as your weights... which I agree with).

Make sure to read 76-81 AGAIN to get a grip in the loads. HIIT done CORRECTLY is brutal. It's sprint work, not "let me go kinda fast work".

You've got a different goal. If that's the case, go at it.

This isn't a reco for the "general public" per se, it's a specific reco for AI work and those that were killing the cardio and not making gains in the gym.

Did you watch the video at ALL? (if you did, watch it again)

This recommendation was regarding cardio for AI WORK ONLY.

Doing cardio for other reasons is fine. I do light cardio to warm up and get some reading done... if I have time.

You don't have to agree... you do what works for you.

Couple of points:

Cardio DOES NOT speed up metabolism... except for in UNTRAINED individuals. EPOC is drastically reduced as your recovery ability improves.

You've also basically reiterated the whole point of this video with your "don't overdo it"...

That's the problem, everyone was overdoing it. 6 30 min interval sessions a week is ridiculous for a guy trying to build.

not to mention cardio enhances blood flow which enhances weight training recovery. i just seen a post of him saying he did 10-20minutes walking on an incline before weight training and 20-30minutes after weight training. now if im not mistaken that is a heck of a lot of cardio for some guy who tells us all to stop doing cardio. walking on an incline is very taxing especially before a workout. so many good points in a lot of the other podcasts but then just plain wrong information thrown in the mix. so we are getting the mindset forced on us that just because they make a few valid points EVERYTHING they say must be correct when we know it isnt.

Sorry do not agree with the "no cardio" idea, I do not accept the concept that cardio just burns calories; it's a far more complex process than that. The human body wants to induce minimal stress on itself, and will adapt the body's make up accordingly i.e. shifting excess weight. Cardio actually induces the release of hormones, speeding up metabolism making the body naturally leaner even if you do then consume an equivalent number of calories after. And unless you do excessive cardio, your lean mass will not be cannibalised. A faster metabolism speeds up all body processes meaning a faster recovery from heavy weight training. And saying that cardio reduces your weight workout intensity is nonsense, provided enough of a break is provided between cardio and weight you will probably find that your energy levels are improved. Everyone knows that cardio raises energy levels, you always feel more alert next day after a cardio session if you don’t overdo it. And don’t get me started on the health benefits for the heart etc. Weight lifters are always looking for excuses to skip cardio and this has to be one of the most elaborate ones yet.

My situation is that I do MMA and weight training. I do Kickboxing Monday and Wednesday with cardio, pad-work, and sparring for 2 hours, and jiujitsu Tues and Thursday but only an hour each. How much effect will that have on my weight training cause I also wanna gain muscle especially on my shoulders?

Aw man - I just started on the Stubborn Fat Protocol, I think first developed by Lyle McDonald. In a fasted state with HIIT/interval training, followed by steady-state cardio. I like doing it cause I'm pretty good at it - I think I'm more fast and agile if I were to do sports. But I am pretty winded after HIIT, and kinda sore throughout the week. I've been trying out ESE for a few weeks now, fasting 2 days a week, and I'm down to 160 and 13% bf - from 165 and 16% bf before I started SFP and ESE. I'm 5'10 and with the AI formula, I'm on for my waist measurement at 31, but 5" off my shoulder measurment at 45 - so I'm probably ectomorphic. I guess I'm concerned with losing muscle mass - I don't have access to a gym, weight machine, or kettlebell (my heaviest weights being 20lb dumbells and one 25), so I don't know if I'll be able to reach my ideal 50" shoulder measurement.. I found an interesting post about gaining strength and definition with light weights: http://fitnessblackbook.com/muscle_tone_strategies_/lift-light-weights-for-low-reps-to-gain-strength-and-muscle-definition/ I guess originally developed by Pavel Tsatsouline. Are any such exercises part of your Systems, and would they have an effect on the AI score? Another question, do you recommend SFP or any cardio for people doing your 'Burn' System, focusing on fat loss? Thanks for your help!

What about the people that want good cardio though? I want all round good health and be able to perform excellent in any physical activity.

It's extremely hard for me to gain weight and even harder when I train my cardio. I've established a fairly well-shaped body except it's like a mini version because I weigh so little.

I love this podcast! This is like my third or fourth time listening to it to make sure the people that say they will check it out actually do so. People don't realize that it is too hard to try and out exercise a bad diet. Thanks for the pod and when is the Venus Index coming?

You may not be able to get spot on, but you'll likely get closer.

Even though "perfection" is the overall goal, you'll still see some impressive effects as you move closer to it, so even if you DON'T end up spot on... (which would be a little difficult without weights), you'll still be better than 95% of guys.

Work with what you have.

Due to a physical dissability, I'm not able to do typical weight training excercises like bench presses, or anything with machines. However, I can still do calisthenic workouts like pushups and the like. I've read that pushups alone can get you some mean shoulders, but could I still use AI to achive my "golden ratio" using just calisthenics?
