Clear the Mechanism: Interview with AT-12 Winner Audie Harrison

Here’s your new interview with one of the winners from the 12th Adonis Golden Ratio Transformation Contest.

Today John talks to Audie Harrison who placed 6th in our last contest.

Audie begins the discussion talking about his obsession with coffee.  It had become his crutch, helping him get through extended sessions in front of his PC.  He knew it was time to make a change and rather than gradually making a change he decided to “Clear The Mechanism” and went cold-turkey.

This mental battle would prove to be a continuing theme during the period of his transformation contest.

Prior to beginning the AGR System, Audie’s weight had the “Yo-Yo” effect. He was literally at the mercy of his lifestyle or environment.  Desperately looking for something to focus on, he felt AT12 would be the great opportunity to take control of his physique.

Audie’s Transformation Essay:

I decided to do AT12 quite a while before the contest even started. I’d gained more fat than I would have liked and decided the competition would be a good way to focus my energy and keep me on track. Had I really thought hard about it I never would have entered at this time what with a family holiday to contend with as well as a week I would be away with work. It had me freaking out at the time but I’m glad I did it  anyway.

I knew I was in for a tough time and I had actually planned on being very close to my golden waist by the time the competition started, which I knew would leave the majority of my transformation to come in the form of muscle growth, which is obviously very slow. I’d set the bar high for myself but that was fine with me.

Workout wise there was nothing too fancy. I’d spoken to various forum members about what worked for them and decided to do Adonis 3.1 and add in a Adonis Golden Ratio (AGR) Booster every single day on top of it, or as much as my body would allow anyways. My body tolerated the flow of Adonis 3.1 and I was able to stay mentally engaged during the workouts. Calories were a huge pain for me. I was on a deficit the whole time and I’d experimented with two different eating patterns, one of which made me feel horrible for two weeks.

All in all,  I really enjoyed the competition even though I felt I made more mistakes than I needed to.  Something struck me as soon as I’d had my pictures done. There was this feeling of catharsis where everything just seemed to evaporate and I felt an immense sense of relief. It was at that point that I realized just how hard this competition can be on someone without them even knowing it.  My biggest support system was the online community. There are some terrific guys on there. They’ll stand by you and encourage you when you need it, and give you a mental shake when you need that too. I honestly don’t know if I could have made it through the whole contest without the support and encouragement I received from those guys.

One thing I’m very glad to take way from this contest is the liberation from doubts and worries that I had pre contest. I’m genuinely looking forward to the years ahead. Many thanks to everyone behind the Adonis Golden Ratio System, and a special shout-out to all you guys on the forums! Thanks to you that I have a very clear vision of the road ahead. I know now exactly what physique I want and exactly how I’m going to get it!

Editor’s Note:

Breaking The Mould: Interview with AT-12 Winner Elliot Mould

Here’s your new interview with one of the winners from the 12th Adonis Golden Ratio Transformation Contest.

Today John talks to Elliot Mould who placed 7th in our last contest.  Being a former Hockey Player, Elliot describes himself  as being a fit athlete, but never being lean.  It was lifelong goal of his but he never had the proper instruction on how to achieve that end state.  While young, he was able to carry his weight proportionately,  however, lessons learned from later on in life would later guide him in the direction of training for looks, instead of  the traditional “bigger, faster, stronger” athletic approach.

Breaking The Mould: Elliot’s Adonis Lifestyle Journey to Contest AT12

Elliot shares with us  his “Adonis Origins” images prior to the start of contest AT12.

Before discovering AGR, he was about 260 lbs.  Stepping back to his athletic roots he was able to dwindle his way down to 230 lbs.  However, he was frustrated with the proverbial “workout-hopping” routine.

He had tried several other workout plans before deciding to follow through with AGR and shadow contest AT11.  He lost over 25  pounds in contest AT11, finishing at 205.  His only regret, was not entering…  Determined to build upon his initial 12 week success he continued the challenge and entered AT12. Checkout his progress pics below:

Elliot’s Transformation Essay:

I originally joined AGR back in Feb 2013 but I only looked around the site.  It wasn’t until just before AT11 started that I actually downloaded the program and started doing the workouts.  I was put in Category 2 and it ended up working out great.  The results I got from Category 2 made me definitely want to join AT12 as I had lost 30lbs+ in that 12 weeks and I hadn’t even started using the nutrition calculator, I simply read ESE and cut back on what I was eating.  Of course, now I was in Category 3 and the focus was body re-composition, which meant the focus wasn’t primarily fat loss and I know that building muscle takes much longer so I worked out 6 days a week.

At this point, I had used the nutrition calculator and knew what amount I should be eating, but only tried counting calories for a week and then stopped.  Due to my current situation, I often eat meals that are prepared and made by others, and often casserole like dishes, so I have no idea how many calories I am consuming which most likely kept me from getting leaner in the mid-section.  I would simply try to be reasonable.

I found that nearing the end of the contest I was getting more tired, during workouts and throughout the day which not only came from pushing hard in the gym, but perhaps also the lower than recommended calorie intake, and perhaps lack of sleep at night.  One thing for sure is that this contest kept me going at a hard pace.  My results from Category 2 when I shadowed AT11 and then being a part of this contest fuelled my motivation.  I am happy with my results but can’t help to think what would have been if I followed the RTD recommendations for the calorie intake.

I think the reason why the contest wasn’t so bad for me in terms of sticking with it is because I really didn’t change too much in my life for it from what I was doing before the contest, and therefore will be able to maintain this and continue to work towards reaching my Adonis Golden Ratio.

This is the first program that I ever really stuck with and committed to, probably because the results came so quick, and I am definitely happy that I did and will continue to stick with it.  Being a part of the contest made me accountable, which kept me motivated to push hard and give a high level of effort no matter what and for that, I would recommend entering a contest to anyone.

No matter what your starting point is, just give it your very best early on and you will experience leaps and bounds in progress towards your AGR.

Some important things that the AGR philosophy has taught me that have forever changed the way I look at things would definitely have to include nutrition and the idea of fat availability.  The more fat you have, the less you need to eat is something that is critical as well as the reverse taper diet and the fact that it all comes down to calories in and calories out.

This was first and foremost for me.  Just as important though is the change of thinking for me in the gym and the idea of not lifting with my ego.  Use manageable weights and perfect form, go to form failure, and lift with intention by focusing on contracting the actual muscle you are training in that exercise.  For me, it’s all about time under tension as opposed to just moving weights through space.

It was less about the number on the dumbbell, and more about how hard I actually worked the muscle.  I was completely open-minded when I started this program and just followed the workouts to a T and it worked.  This program is definitely not run of the mill, but you need to be willing to try something new without questioning every little thing because it’s not the same as what you have been doing or what you have been told.  Let’s be honest though, if what you were already doing was working, then you probably wouldn’t be looking to a new program, so it’s important to put all that aside and do what the program asks of you.

Editor’s Note:

Hey Elliot,

Just wanted to start off by saying you have a cool first name.  LOL   Coming from a military background, it’s often what I go-by as well.

I really enjoyed  listening to your podcast and reading your essay on your transformation.  You have come a long way and it was interesting to hear how much of mental transformation this was as much as being a physical one.  You definitely earned it bro and like John said, that guy in the ‘after” pictures really is you!  Just knowing that your capable of  transforming into “model material: given the conditions should be a testament in itself.  After all, you had to put yourself in that arena to “look the part.”

Dropping the “big guy” mentality and now training to achieve the “aestethetic/ripped” look can be quite a transition.  I feel like your still learning about the new “you” and exploring the possibilities of where you can go with the AGR system.  That is awesome and I would encourage you to create a new mold for who you want to be and to keep pushing ahead for great things in your fitness goals!

Doctor Undergoes “A Golden Transformation” Procedure: Interview with AT-12 Winner Harold Shim

Here’s your new interview with one of the winners from the 12th Adonis Golden Ratio Transformation Contest.

Today John talks to Harold Shim who placed 4th  in our last 12-Week Transformation contest.

Harold, who is an actual  Doctor by  profession stumbled upon AGR systems after first following the principles of “intermittent fasting” from Brad Pilon’s Eat Stop Eat.  Discouraged by the temporary, unsustainable results from “Fad Diets” Harold was enjoying the success of his new dieting regiment when he realized in order to achieve his goal of becoming “lean & shredded” he would need a workout to compliment this new approach.

He openly admits at first he was skeptical, but quickly noticed the AGR systems were the only program he found where the emphasis was building a balanced body as opposed to just strength training.

Taking advice and tips from previous contest winners he decided to enter AT12 on a whim.  However, he booked a photo shoot early on to help keep him accountable.

Following in the footsteps of previous contest winners, Harold underwent a “Golden Transformation” procedure of his very own!

The Golden Way: Gaining Muscle in a Deficit

Harold has held the banner high for the AGR approach of transformation possibilities  within a 12 week period!  Harold is our second documented contestant to have gained muscle while in a  weight loss deficit.  He Lost 14.5 pounds of fat while simultaneously gaining 9 pounds of muscle!

As verified by the DEXA Scan:

Harold’s Transformation Essay:

Funny how many of us were “athletes” at one time in our lives and think to ourselves that changing our bodies should be something that we can easily do ourselves. After all we’ve all lifted weights and we could follow anyone of a million diets.  On the contrary, it’s no less stupid than thinking I can build a house because I know how to cut wood and bang nails!  Ummm NO!

What drew me to the AGR Systems was two-fold.  First off, I finally decided that if I didn’t try to get the body I wanted now, I likely never would and second, at age 50 I would be losing muscle mass very quickly if  I didn’t do something to slow it down. I first started by stumbling across ESE which gave me that … “duh of course stupid!” moment. From there I looked for a comprehensive weight training program and through the ESE links I found Adonis.

As recommended I did my initial Dexa Scan which put me at 17% body fat.  After following the basics of ESE and the Adonis program to the “T”, my Dexa on Nov 27,13 showed that I dropped 7kg of fat and put on 4kg of lean muscle giving me a body fat now of 8.1%

I started trying to mess with success towards the end by looking for ways to speed the last bit of fat loss.  Fortunately, I returned to the AGR principles recognizing that the last leg of the journey will take some more patience and trust.  The goals I set out for myself only 12 weeks back are unchanged and really should be unchanged.  Get in the best shape of my life, make the changes easy and most of all make it sustainable.  Thanks Guys!

Editor’s Note:

Harold,

What an amazing transformation you’ve had! Better yet, your results were documented by the Dexa.  I really enjoyed listening to your interview and have a great deal of respect for you not only as a contestant, but as a Doctor in a very demanding profession.  Thank you for  your willingness to listen and apply the success principles of the contest winners who have gone before you.  Your  transformation raises the banner high for the “Golden Army.”

My biggest take-away was a phrase or quote you mentioned during your interview, “Just because you know how to bang nails, doesn’t mean you know how to build a house.”  That’s a “Golden” nugget if I ever heard one!

Look forward to hearing more updates from you along your journey with the Adonis Lifestyle. Congrats again Harold!

Trainer Turned Competitor: Interview with AT11 Winner James Tonda

Here’s your new interview with one of the winners from the 11th Adonis Golden Ratio Transformation Contest.

Today John talks to James Tonda, who placed 2nd in our last 12-Week Transformation contest.

James is no stranger to the gym, having a background in Safety/Fitness/Wellness, he has seen a myriad of fitness products come and go over the years. However, James explains in his essay, what makes the Adonis Golden Ratio system different.

His path to AT11 was unexpected, yet most rewarding. Prior to AT11 James was following another workout plan and had received an email from Adonis.  However, he simply dismissed the email hoping to return to it later.

It wasn’t until another friend had received the same email and asked for his opinion.  Curious about what the content of the email might offer, James opened the email and never looked back!

After taking the the plunge and beginning the AGR program,  he was truly impressed by the  overwhelming amount of information offered to him at such great value.

The AGR system, backed by undisputed scientific facts was his first positive experience with sound training concepts and a nutrition approach that was realistic and one could actually follow!

Although he has trained several competitors, James himself has never competed.  Nevertheless, when AT11 came around he had a running start as he’d been following AGR about two months prior to the contest.  He was so pleased with his results he decided to enter the contest.

Here’s a throwback image of James pre-contest AT11.

James’s Transformation Essay:

Originally, I began using the Adonis Golden Ratio (AGR) workouts as an experiment. Having been involved in Safety/Fitness/Wellness in both my personal and professional life for well over 30 years ( I will be 49 in October), I have probably tried out almost every workout/nutrition program that has been created and/or promoted via the internet, either for myself or while conducting research for friends, family or clients.

In addition to my day job as Safety Manager for a government agency, I also conduct personal training. As such, I attempt to keep up with research and technology to acquire as much knowledge as possible, to not only meet my individual needs, but also those of my trainees or people in my immediate circle that I help. My personal fitness goals have always been sport specific or as needed for the multiple extreme sports I have participated in.

When I first received the email about the Adonis lifestyle, I was experimenting with MI40, so I dismissed the Adonis email (huge mistake). Fortunately, I had a friend who received the same email (Adonis Index) and as is often the case, asked me if I knew anything about it. Not being one to offer an opinion without actually knowing what I was talking about, I discontinued MI40, ponied up what now seems like a ridiculously low $47 and have been overwhelmingly pleased with the Adonis Index program ever since.

As John has mentioned, one of the greatest benefits of trying out others workout/nutrition programs, is not expending valuable time creating and writing out my personal workout. The downside is a lot of the programs offered online are usually incomplete, encompassing either the workout or nutrition, very seldom both. The ones that do incorporate both workout & nutrition plans, in my experience have been ineffective, actually taking people further away from their desired goals. Based on my results (below), I will not waste another cent on any others products moving forward.

The amount of research that has been conducted and presented to back up the philosophy of the Adonis Lifestyle is unmatched in the fitness industry. Through using the Adonis Index lifestyle, I learned the so called “facts” that are presented by the majority of supplement companies, fitness gurus, Personal Training certifications, etc. that I had followed religiously and instructed others on for years, are bogus “Bro-Science” and the research referenced to support their claims is commonly biased and often unrelated to the actual results they are proclaiming.
In conducting my personal experiment of AGR, I attempted to follow the workout and nutrition recommendations to the letter. The only facets of the AGR program I varied were the rest periods between sets and amount of days per week that I trained.

For example: if a rest period called for 120 seconds rest but I felt “ready” sooner, I didn’t wait. However, I never allowed myself to rest longer than the prescribed rest period. Additionally, I often completed two workouts in one session, for 6 days/week. As a result of doubling up, I was able to complete the 12 week Category 3 workouts, plus occasional boosters within my first two months.
For nutritional direction: I utilized the Anything Goes Diet by John Barban and fasting via “Eat Stop Eat”  by Brad Pilon.
For example:
1. Monday 7:00 AM thru Thursday 7:00 PM, I followed the Reverse Taper Diet “RTD”calculator caloric recommendation.
2. From Thursday at 7:00 PM to Friday at 7:00 PM I fasted for 24 hrs, eating dinner after working out Friday evening.
3. Saturday was Cheat Day, normally averaging 6000 calories, but a few of those days exceeded 7000 calories.
4. Sunday morning after breakfast at 7:00 AM, I fasted again for 24 hrs, starting the process over Monday morning.

Supplementation wise: I use Muscle Milk natural protein powder, Blue Star Nutraceuticals pre-workout Extreme Rush, BioTRUST LeptiBurn & Pro-X10 and a generic Creatine – 5 grams three times/day. I personally endorse all of these supplements as they 100% make a difference in my body, training and health. Also, the companies I named use only high grade quality, FDA GMP certified products.
After having unbelievable success using the Adonis Index for only 2 months, I decided to boost my focus and personal commitment to my AI experiment and entered the 11th Adonis Transformation contest aka AT11. As you can see from my stats (directly below), within the first two months, (prior to my AT11 entry) I made significant positive changes to my body:
6? 0.5? Tall
Start of Adonis Index – 3/15/13 – 211 lbs., Shoulder = 51, Waist = 34, Chest = 41.5, AI Ratio = 1.500
Start of Adonis AT11 – 5/10/13 – 197 lbs., Shoulder = 52, Waist = 32, Chest = 42.5, AI Ratio = 1.625

During my transformation, there were several internal battles I had to continually fight and eventually overcame. The biggest challenge was giving myself the “permission to be light”, as the thought of being less than 200 lbs. was unfathomable. Also, having to deal with the naysayers telling me I was getting too skinny was constantly feeding my doubting ego, but the positive reinforcement of the online Adonis Forum and friends at the gym telling me I was looking “jacked” kept me on target to obtain the perfect Adonis ratio.

The second biggest challenge was Fasting. At first, I thought I could see muscle disappearing and felt like my strength was declining during workouts. Well, the mind is a powerful thing, after focusing and getting out of my own way, I accepted that the science provided by Brad Pilon disputed my personally assigned misbeliefs, giving me the confidence to continue on with fasting. Now, I couldn’t imagine not including fasting in my wellness regimen.

The final challenge for me was leaving “GREAT” enough alone. By that, I mean not changing the Adonis programs because I thought I knew better. These programs are specifically designed to be the most direct route to your fitness goals. My suggestion to anyone already using the Adonis programs or contemplating using them is to set your ego aside and follow the workouts and RTD nutrition calculator to the letter!

My final AT11 measurements, (#3 below) in my opinion, are the “proof in the pudding” that a well-designed, scientifically backed program, such as the Adonis Index are an invaluable tool in regards to obtaining your fitness goals, no matter what they may be. In only 5 months, I increased lean muscle mass, decreased body fat, increased strength and improved my cardiovascular conditioning. With my results from using the Adonis Index being irrefutable, I highly recommend the Adonis Index lifestyle to everyone!

I have also confidently referred women to the Venus Index (VI) knowing it is as scientifically sound as AI. More specifically, I introduced my girlfriend (Lourdes Cota) to the Venus lifestyle, who entered the 8th Venus Transformation Contest aka VT8 for women and she made amazing changes to her physique as well (she included a pic of both of us together in her submission).

Below are the results of my total body measurements from 3 milestones:

It is with sincere appreciation and gratitude, I say thank you to everyone involved in the creation of the Adonis & Venus Index Lifestyles. I don’t know how many Adonis/Venus couples you have, but from my perspective it is a great relationship enhancer, mentally, physically and emotionally.

Respectfully submitted,

James Tonda

P.S. On a side note (not part of my summary essay), I thought you might find this humorous. During the 12 week AT11 contest I discovered I have an umbilical hernia. I am sure you must be asking yourself, why is this funny?

Well, I always had this small “pouch” of fat (so I thought) above my belly button that I just couldn’t get rid of.That is because it wasn’t a pouch of fat, it was an intestine pushing its way through the hernia.

The leaner I became, the more evident IT became that “the pouch” was not an actual pouch of fat. The real confirmation came while performing stability ball rollouts. During an Abs workout, upon rolling out, I felt a burning sensation that was undeniably letting me know something was going on (or out). HA!

But, in the Marine Corps I learned two rules:
#1- Never quit
#2- Always refer to Rule #1

So, since there is no quit in me, I continued on with the contest! Next stop surgery.

I did my best to push it back in during my poses, couldn’t do much about the inflammation/edema, so if you happen to see an alien trying to bust through you’ll know why!

Semper Fi,

James Tonda

Editor’s Note:

James,

Rebound Recovery: Interview with AT11 Winner Michael B.

Here’s your new interview with one of the winners from the 11th Adonis Golden Ratio Transformation Contest.

Today John talks to Michael B. who placed 1st  in our last 12-Week Transformation contest.

Michael is a unique contestant to AT11, he previously shadowed contest AT6 and made a transformation that most would be proud of.

However, his approach was to just cut as much weight as possible without fully embracing the AGR nutrition and maintenance  principles.

Needless to say, his transformation was temporary and Michael ended up rebounding to his original starting weight.

Here’s a throwback image of  Michael when he first embarked on his Fitness Journey and the results of him successfully shadowing contest AT6, an earlier AGR transformation contest.

Michael’s Transformation Essay:

My Adonis journey has been a huge learning experience for me. I actually got involved with the Adonis Index Systems in September 2011. I joined a bit late to enter AT6 but shadowed the contest anyway, having an amazing transformation. I started at about 175 lbs. (I’m 5′ 7.5″ tall) with a 35 inch waist on September 15 and ended up weighing 147 lbs. with a 1.8 AI ratio on November 23. It was the first time I had visible abs in my life and I looked great, but the transformation didn’t stick 🙁

Shortly after the contest, I rebounded all the way back to where I had started. Even though I had accomplished a physical change, it wasn’t a transformation. I knew how to cut weight. In fact, I now realize that I had cut too far down, without even coming close to figuring out maintenance.

My one saving grace was that I kept on doing the Adonis workouts even as I was rebounding. I completed a giant cycle and was definitely getting stronger, but I was ashamed at how I looked.

I re-connected with the AI forums and focused on getting my mind right for true transformation. I started AT11 at 183 lbs. and a 35 in. waist. My goal was maintenance versus an all-or-nothing cut-down. I had to essentially come to terms with the priorities in my life (God, family, and living a life worth living) and how an Adonis body supports them. My focus became integrating Adonis into my lifestyle versus making Adonis a short-term priority.

The result: Before and after DEXA scans showed I had lost 16.48 lbs. of fat and gained 7.13 lbs. of lean mass in just 8 weeks! I went from 18% body fat to 8%. I am now just about at my golden measurements and enjoying life so much more.

Thanks to the Adonis family, especially you forum users, for welcoming a rebounder back and motivating him to stay in the fight. A big thanks to Barban, Pilon, and Howard for all their podcasts and the lessons I have learned from their discussions. You guys are life changers!

Rich’s Transformation Essay:

I joined the Adonis Community in March of 2010 and this is the third time I have completed a contest. I have seen the AGR site grow and refine its system, improving itself along the way. I am happy that I have been able to participate in this experience.  After this third contest I have come to realize that exercise and nutrition are not short term goals but lifelong changes. However, the biggest takeaways are having a plan and following through with it, participating and connecting with the Adonis Community and most importantly, having a great support system at home.
The Adonis Golden Ratio provides a path to success. When I first joined it was a revolutionary idea to me that there are specific metrics to achieve the ideal body. The Adonis Golden Ratio provided a specific defined goal for any guy and provides the workout and nutrition guidelines to help them get there. With this in place I learned my part was simply not to over think the workouts. My part was to be consistent, performing the workouts with proper intensity.
The Adonis Community is a great resource and being a part of it is as important as doing the workouts. It is a good place for like minded people to come together and share their struggles and successes. I found support, advice and even a mentor to help with the final weeks of this contest.
I am lucky to have a mate who is of like mind, especially when it comes to fitness. She is a Venus member who, like me, embraces the whole lifestyle. Adonis and Venus have helped us both understand that by having a good workout plan and eating less we can reshape our bodies. We are able to encourage each other and support one another as we make our health a priority in our lives.
For those who are new to AGR, I believe the program provides a well laid out plan to achieving your optimum body. I can honestly say that my success comes from consistency with the AGR program. Do the workouts, eat less and be involved.
