Water Weight, Fat, Muscle, What is Signal vs Noise?

Claims in the health and fitness industry (and any industry for that matter) can be clinically or technically significant, but have no significance in the real world.

In other words, something might have a significant effect in a laboratory setting, but will never be applicable to you in your daily life.

This makes it difficult to tell what is a realistic and useful claim that you can incorporate into your daily routine for real results, and what is just marketing speak to get you to buy into something that you can never actually take action on or use.

In this podcast we’ll examine all of the following issues:

1 – The difference between real world significance and clinical significance

2 – Separating the signal from the noise: are the results that you are hearing about normal changes in human physiology that are simply being brought to your attention for the first time.

3 – The 80-20 principle and how 20 % of your effort will end up being responsible for 80 % of your results.

4 – Water weight: how water weight/retention is the big confounding factor in the way your body looks and how fitness and nutrition marketers take advantage of this to make claims that their products can do things that are not possible.

5 – Getting to the core principle of what works for weight loss.

A Huge THANK YOU!

’tis Thanksgiving here in ‘ole North Carolina and I’m getting ready to jump in the car with the woman and head out to my uncle’s house for some good ‘ole turkey, ham, and collard greens.

Mmmmm…

But first, I wanted to express my sincerest “Thanks” on behalf of all of us to you at the beginning of this holiday season.

You see, you may think it funny, but we all consider you a friend and we want the best for you… and if you ever catch us at a bar or restaurant in your area…

(I’m in Atlanta next week BTW)

… we’ll most certainly buy you a drink.

So, in saying that, let me tell you the most asked question we generally get during the holiday season.

“How do I stick to my diet/eating program during the holiday season?”

I can’t tell you how many men and women crumble during this time.

They fall off the horse.  Get discouraged.

QUIT.

Remember, as we’ve said in the podcasts, diet and nutrition “stick” is 80-90% social awareness.  It’s the social situations that you’re in… friends, family, work, etc… that largely contribute to your success or failure of sticking to your plan.

So what do you do during the holidays… when all of the good food is around?

Well, you have 2 choices:

One… be a “man of steel” and challenge the very existence of your will power (and belief power), control your portions heavily, deny yourself the goodness that Thanksgiving and Christmas offer

with family and friends as you look weird declining that glass of eggnog.

(Mmmm… eggnog)

Or two… plan for it.

Here’s the deal.

Typically, your holidays likely have anywhere from 2-8 “meals” that you’re gonna be tempted to overindulge.

And this includes holiday parties and stuff like that.

So why don’t you plan on it?  Build your diet and eating AROUND these events to keep you on track.

Too many people get discouraged and jump off the horse, beat themselves up, and QUIT due to overeating or drinking during
the holidays…

… because it’s TOO HARD to resist.

BUT… BUT… BUT…

If you PLAN for these things… guess what?

THEY ARE A PART OF YOUR PLAN!

You just know that the next day, you just have to eat less than you normally do during your diet.

Sounds so simple doesn’t it?

IT IS!

Don’t beat yourself up over the holidays.

Don’t look like the weird guy.

Don’t be antisocial.

BE PROACTIVE and plan these things in.

Interval Training vs Steady State Cardio For Fat Loss – On Trial

In this podcast we review the popular claim that high intensity interval training is superior to steady state cardio for fat loss.

The research supporting the claims you see and hear may not be what you think.

The fact that a research paper is published doesn’t mean it is accurate, and it rarely means it supports the claims the fitness and nutrition industry is trying to make from it.

In this podcast we will deconstruct the claim about interval training and walk you through the most popular and commonly quoted research paper that supposedly ‘proves’ that interval training is the gold standard for fat loss.

Get ready for another trip down the rabbit hole.

Red Pill… Blue Pill… Your Choice

I hope you’re having an awesome weekend so far.

It’s funny, I was just chatting with a guy named John on Facebook about the podcasts and how he likened it to us being like “Morpheus”…

“Take the Blue Pill… and life goes on, and you know no difference…”

“However, take the Red Pill, and I’ll show you just HOW deep the rabbit hole goes”

(and it helps that I actually saw “The Matrix” the other day as well)

In fact, during the chat, John actually made the comment of how he wondered how Barban and Pilon couldn’t be SCARED FOR THEIR LIVES due to the exposing and uncovering that we’ve been doing.

We’ve been giving you the red pill.

And if you’ve been listening and paying attention, your life will never be the same… which is a good thing.

BUT… you haven’t seen ANYTHING YET!

If you think some of the other podcasts have blown the doors off of what you THOUGHT was right about muscle building and fat loss…

Monday’s podcast is a MUST.

If the other podcasts are like dynamite:

THIS ONE IS LIKE AN ATOMIC BOMB!

Why?

Simple.

You’re about to WATCH (video) us as we totally deconstruct and pick apart the LANDMARK STUDY that “proves” interval training is better than steady state cardio…

… and the end result…

… is SHOCKING, hell – I was even in awe.

Seriously, all joking aside.

Look, if something has MY jaw dropping (and I’ve been in this industry for over 10 years), you’ve got to imagine how crazy it’s going to be.

If the others were ONE red pill, this will be TEN.

But this is just the start.

The rabbit hole gets deep.

We’ve got MORE.

I’ve got 2 reports coming to you in the near future. One on Thursday.

One the week after.

They’re different – it’s more red pills.

And your life will never be the same.

Stay cool,

Brad

p.s. Yesterday’s podcast with John Alanis on “How To Get Women To Chase You” and “Personal Authority” is awesome.

If you haven’t listened in, the link above is where you do it.

p.p.s. If you like this interview, he’s got a few free reports you can check out on his site.

Highly recommended.

John Alanis Interview – On Personal Authority

You’re gonna like this interview with John Alanis.

Not only does he got into some of the tactics, techniques, and strategies that he uses to get women to chase HIM, but we also go into some interesting topics on “inner game” including:

Personal Authority

– Approach Anxiety

the Bill Parcells “method” of women getting

– Plus more

AND, if you like what you hear, go check out John’s stuff, he’s got some cool free reports like “Where to meet high quality women” and more.

Deconstructing Myths, Lies, and “Creative Analysis”

In Monday’s podcast, John and I went into detail about how Politics, Science, and Industry creatively CLASH together to bring you the claims, research, and even GUIDELINES that most of us now take for the gospel.

If you didn’t get a chance to listen in, here’s the link:

Nutrition Guidelines and Marketing – Who Can You Trust?

Now, as promised, we’re going to take an actual study for next weeks podcast and show you how to deconstruct what’s really going on and EXPOSE the realities of both what the study really means and how the scientists use creative analysis to highlight claims and maximize “punch” to get their stuff published…

… which, of course, lets the industry marketing guys run wild with a study that shows 300% more fat loss or muscle building, even though the actual gross fat loss or muscle gain is essentially GRAMS or a TENTH of a gram.

But, we need your help.

In the comments section of the blog, we’re asking for some direction on WHAT type of studies you want to see exposed or ripped apart.

Right now, it’s the Tabata protocol (interval training) and the most quoted study there is on the subject that it looks like we’re gonna tackle.

However, if you want something else, let us know.

Also, we’ve had a few people say that they can’t get the player to play.

I’m going to have all of the podcast files sent to a redundant server and upload a page where you can get the raw files in case this happens to you… should be next week.

Oh, and transcripts should be available for all of the podcasts as well starting in 2 weeks, just in case you like to read more than you do listen.

So there you go, more nuggets for your dome on this wonderful Wednesday.

Don’t forget to “vote” for Monday’s podcast subject today.

Stay cool,

Brad

p.s. Here’s a cool video of John talking about one of our most common questions:

What Makes Up Metabolic Rate?

Enjoy.
