Gaining Weight vs Gaining Muscle

Gaining weight can be the result of adding muscle mass, fat mass, or water weight (in various forms).

Many guys who are interesting in ‘gaining weight’ are actually interested in ‘gaining muscle’ and they assume additional muscle will translate into a heavier bodyweight. But how do you know for sure how much muscle you can add to your body and how much weight you could possibly gain?

Factors to consider include:

Age

Somatotype

Height

Years of training experience

The genetic material of your body is the most basic starting point and will tell most of the story as to how much ‘weight’ and ‘muscle’ you can gain.

In this podcast we’ll discuss:

1. Weight gain vs muscle gain

2. Why anyone wants to gain weight in the first place

3. The difference between how you look with a shirt on vs with a shirt off

4. The relationship between how much you weigh and how you look at that weight

5. The normal fluctuations you can experience in bodyweight on a day to day basis.

Ron Hansen – Overall Winner

Ron Hansen won the overall first place and the build and burn category.

Before:

Weight: 210 lbs
Shoulder: 50 inches
Waist: 36 inches
Adonis Index Ratio: 1.38

———————————-

After 10 weeks:

Weight: 195 lbs
Shoulders: 51.5 inches
Waist: 34 inches
Adonis Index Ratio: 1.51

Ron made great improvements in his overall muscular size while cutting down his waist and it shows with a fantastic AI ratio of 1.51

For Ron’s height:

Golden Waist: 32.6 inches

Golden Shoulders: 52.5 inches

As you can see Ron is very close to a perfect Golden Ratio. Ron doesn’t need to make any changes to his training or his diet. As long as he continues exactly what got him this far in 10 weeks I expect him to get to his golden AI ratio in the near future.

Jason Haynes 2nd Place

Jason won the Burn category and finished 2nd overall.

Before:

Weight: 200 lbs
Shoulders: 51 inches
Waist: 41 inches
Adonis Index Ratio: 1.24

———————————–

After 10 weeks:

Weight: 171.6
Shoulders: 48
Waist: 36.25
Adonis Index Ratio: 1.32

Jason made big time improvements, and even better than his numbers might indicate. His current AI ratio is 1.32 and he’s only 0.5 inches away from his golden shoulder measurement.

For Jason’s height:

Golden Waist: 30.17 inches

Golden Shoulders: 48.5 inches

From here on in Jason only needs to maintain the muscle mass that he already has while continuing to focus on cutting down to his golden waist over the next few months.

Tristan Creswick 3rd Overall

Tristan came in 3rd overall and 2nd in the Burn & Build.

Before:

Weight: 198.2 lbs
Shoulders: 45.2 inches
Waist: 37 inches
Adonis Index Ratio: 1.22

———————————-

After 10 weeks:

Weight:  182.1 lbs
Shoulders: 46.5 inches
Waist: 33 inches
Adonis Index Ratio: 1.409

Tristan is less than 1 inch away from the golden waist for his height and managed to put over an inch on his shoulder measurement.

For Tristan’s height:

Golden Waist: 32.2 inches

Golden Shoulders: 51.5 inches

Tristan’s waist is already very close to golden and shouldn’t be a concern at this point. I suggest Tristan focuses now on adding upper body mass over the next 6-12 months.

Pierre Farine Build Category Winner

Pierre Farine won the Build category and finished 4th overall.

Before:

Weight: 135 lbs
Shoulders: 42.5 inches
Waist: 27 inches
Adonis Index Ratio: 1.57

———————————

After 10 weeks:

Weight: 133 lbs
Shoulders: 44 inches
Waist: 27 inches
Adonis Index Ratio:  1.629

Pierre is very lean and has fantastic muscle definition. He managed to pack on 1.5 inches on his shoulder measurement while maintaining his tight waist.

For Pierre’s height:

Golden Waist: 31.7 inches

Golden Shoulders: 51 inches

Pierre looks great and is already sporting a golden AI ratio. From here on in his only job is to build his overall muscle mass up to the golden waist and shoulders for his height.
