What about Genetic Differences in Performance?

Here’s the next episode of the UNCENSORED Podcasts Season 3.

When determining your genetic potential, compare yourself to your own performance; improve yourself. Each of these men worked hard to achieve their best, you can too!

When determining your genetic potential, compare yourself to your own performance; improve yourself. Each of these men worked hard to achieve their best, you can too!

What about genetic differences in performance?

  • There is research to show genetic differences effect performance.
  • We constantly compare ourselves with others in the gym and watching sports events.
  • We can’t help doing that, but you should at least try and compare yourself to someone of very similar genetics.
  • Genetics play a huge role in success; it plays a bigger role than anyone ever wanted to admit.
  • It doesn’t mean you are not a good person or equally of value as a human if you don’t have specific genetic gifts.
  • It doesn’t seem fair. No matter how hard you practice you won’t be the same as someone who is truly gifted.  Life is not fair.
  • If everything was equal the person who did the best hardest work wins. This is not what happens. Genetics plays the bigger role.
  • We are all unique.
  • But at the same time genetics should not be a reason to not work hard to be your best.
  • It is not an excuse to not work hard to achieve your best.  As far as performances compare yourself to your own performance; improve yourself.
  • What you can achieve?
  • Knowing about genetics is great way to understand what other people have achieved.
  • John and Brad go into great detail into how genetics affect various sports.
  • It does not always mean if you train harder you will get the same results as someone else.
  • It does not mean you should give up training.
  • Everyone is capable of change.
  • Don’t base any of your metrics on performance.
  • All that matters is your own results.
  • How you respond to exercise and diet is unique to you.   You can try things that others do, but it does not mean it will work for you. Also what works for you will change over time. You will have to experiment to find what works for you.

Establishing A Golden Presence: Interview with AT11 Winner Jake Hahn

Here’s your new interview with one of the winners from the 11th Adonis Golden Ratio Transformation Contest.

Today John talks to Jake Hahn,  who placed  8th in our last 12-Week Transformation contest.

Jake had picked up AGR a while back and decided to enter AT11 on a whim.  Drawing from inspiration of others, he decided to take the plunge and begin his “Adonis Transformational” Journey.  For Jake, the AGR system presented clearly, the  concepts of both “Science and Art” in regards to goal setting for an “Ideal” physique.  Similar to the concepts of Archery, he now had clear targets to shoot for when he entered the gym.

He was fascinated that the “visually appealing” look the AGR system provided was fully customizable to his body type.  In the interview, Jake mentions what it felt like to give his workouts a full 100% mental commitment.  He learned what it meant to establish a “Golden” presence.

“Presence is more than just being there.”  – Malcolm Forbes

Jake’s Transformation Essay:

I entered AT11 on a whim. A last minute decision brought on by a flash of inspiration. I wanted to experience for myself the motivation that the contests supplied for many passed contestants. So for me, having that deadline in the back of my mind truly was a solid push in the right direction. I found myself training harder and being more serious and committed to understanding what it truly takes to change a body for the better…I learned a lot!

In retrospect, before I found AGR all of my weight training and overall fitness ideas were extremely vague. I knew I wanted to look “good”, but I now know that I had no clue as to what that really meant. Which in turn has helped me to realize that without Adonis I probably never would have truly understood what I was/am after.

Ya know, without a definitive target, archery wouldn’t even exist. It would consist of a person shooting clumsily and  aimlessly into the air with no way to measure the growth of their skills. That’s how I now see my fitness past, and far too many people’s fitness present. I cannot tell you how pleased I am to be where I am, actually know where I am, know where I want to be, and most importantly HOW to get where I want to be!!

Throughout this short 12 week journey I have not only changed my shape in a positive way, I’ve changed my mindset and outlook. This is art. I’m molding myself. I love that! The Adonis team goes above and beyond what is expected from a company/business/people. They offer up amazing insights and LOTS of them!

During my last few weeks leading up to contest end I was personally coached by Adonis Ambassador Allen Elliott! I experienced that “above and beyond” guidance first hand and was truly honored and frankly blown away by the personal attention and care I received from Allen. He is truly a great coach, person, and example. Interacting with him was a solid inspiration for me, and I cannot thank him enough for his insight and support!

In closing I’ll just say this…I have never in my life been a part of a fitness community and training routine that I am so pleased with that I seriously cannot see myself living in any other way. Thank you for all that you’ve done and all that you continue to do. Cheers to the entire Adonis team…the epitome of above and beyond.

EDITOR’S NOTE

Jake,

It’s awesome that you had a strong support group behind you such as wife, family, and members of the adonis community.  I’m glad that I also had the opportunity to personally witness your transformation.

I believe competition brings out the best and worst in us.  Through ups and down’s of the contest you maintained that “Golden Presence” and didn’t lose sight of the goal.

Jake, the AT11 contest has made a positive impact in your life and you now realize the greater theme of AGR…. “It’s not a competition, it’s a lifestyle!”

We look forward to hearing more from you in the future about the progress you’ve made.

Congrats again on a successful transformation!

The Golden One: Interview with AT11 Winner Daniel Carbonel

Here’s your new interview with one of the winners from the 11th Adonis Golden Ratio Transformation Contest.

Today John talks to Daniel Carbonel,  who placed  7th in our last 12-Week Transformation contest.

During the interview, Daniel admits that the AGR program was the first workout program he’d ever followed till the end.  What surprised him the most how although it was less restrictive, in terms of nutrition and meal timing, he was able to see results almost immediately!  Also in the interview, Daniel describes his transformation experience by comparing it to the popular movie, “The Matrix.”

In this analogy he felt as if he was “Neo”, being shown “The Way” and he felt John Barban was “Morpheus.”  Nevertheless Daniel drew on this “movie analogy” inspiration during the AT11 Contest and his results proved to be quite note-worthy.  If  Neo is considered to be “The One” then Daniel is “The Golden One.”

Daniel’s Transformation Essay:

My name is Daniel Carbonel, I’m  34 and  during the contest period of AT11 I felt as if I was in “cruise control.” The peace of mind of the Adonis Golden Ratio system truly relaxed me and gave me comfort I was following a sound plan.  I first began using the AGR  program in January 2013.  To my surprise, I saw notable changes the very first week!  I remember my wife  saying to me, “ I’ve never seen your arms look like that.” I’ve worked out on and off for the last 13 years, but never for a period longer than three months. Now I feel like I’m unstoppable. This is a new way of life for me.  I follow the “Adonis Lifestyle, The Reverse Taper Diet and Eat Stop Eat.”

AT11 contest was an incredible motivator to push myself to the max. More than I ever have before. At the same time, it proved to be such a simple yet life altering change.
Having access to The Adonis Community and listening to the awesome podcasts were phenomenal tools and resources to be able to tap into.

I’ve learned that I don’t have to eat 5-6 times a day, that I don’t have to get crazy about my protein intake and that If I don’t eat in a few hours I won’t loose muscle. I also see a different person in the mirror staring back at me… A better version of myself. I’m now more confident and powerful not only in body but also mind. It is something that I definitely can get used to being. I am in the best shape of my life and I owe it all to you guys!

EDITOR’S NOTE

Daniel,

That’s cool you’re a fan of The Matrix, I thoroughly enjoyed the entire movie trilogy myself.  It was also interesting that in your interview you made the reference  of taking the “Red Pill” versus the “Blue Pill.”  It sounded like for you the transformation was more of a mental battle, which you had already conquered, the physical results were just waiting to catch up.

We look forward to hearing more from you in the Adonis community.

Congrats again to you Daniel aka “The Golden One” for making that mental shift into “Cruise Control” and successfully completing  the 12-week transformation path of contest AT11.

Having trouble getting motivated or started on your fitness routine?

Whether you are just getting started, or getting back into your routine after a break, it’s hard to get started.

It feels overwhelming.

You can read online all day long about all the ways people did it successfully and it seems  overwhelming.  Sometimes it’s a case of fear of failure or just a case of analysis paralysis.

Some days it is a heroic act just to refuse the paralysis of fear and straighten up and step into another day.

Not enough time?

Not motivated?

The goal is to just fit it in.  Do something.  Walk, pushups, chair squats.

Anything is better than nothing.  A little something is forward motion.

Does not have to be complicated.

Crystal Clear: Interview with AT11 Winner William Heinrichs

Here’s your new interview with one of the winners from the 11th Adonis Golden Ratio Transformation Contest.

Even if the path is a little blurry, keep walking.

You’ll focus in when you know what you want.

The picture of your life will become crystal clear.

Just don’t ever give up!

-Unknown

Today we get to learn from William Heinrichs,  who placed  6th in our last 12-Week Transformation contest.

William’s journey into the Adonis Lifestyle began in his late-thirties when he tipped the scale at 205lbs.  He felt that was a wake-up call as he didn’t have that much muscle to “show” for that amount of weight.  Sadly, his first approach was the traditional “bulk and cut” strategy.  Unfortunately for many, including William himself, his progress was showing little return on investment.  Nevertheless, William was persistent; he continued to search for a program that would help him achieve his goals.  When he finally found the AGR program, suddenly his goals became “crystal clear.”

Scroll down to read more of William’s transformation journey in his own words.

William’s Transformation Essay:

It wasn’t until my my late thirties when I finally decided to do something about my increasing waistline and lack of energy.  My first attempt left me entangled in the dreaded “bulk and cut” strategy. For someone who was skinny most of his life, weighing as much as 205 lbs without much muscle was just too shocking for me.

I tried for several more years bouncing from program to program with limited success. When I finally found AGR, I was down to almost 190 lbs. The material [AGR System] made sense to me. The podcasts inspired me. Suddenly, my goals  became crystalized! I made the investment in a small home gym, some dumbbells and I was well on my way by the time AT11 began.

For the first 6 weeks of AT11 I kept a detailed record of everything I ate and drank. I had sets/reps/weight records of every single workout. About half-way through the contest it seemed like everything was falling into place. However, I knew that I had a work rotation coming up which would take me out of the country for many weeks.

I was also worried to about losing control of the momentum I had gained. Luckily the place I was going to work at had a decent gym. Unluckily, I would face a huge, all-you-can eat, free buffet at every meal. For the next 5 weeks, I ate by “feel”, kept up with my training and nervously measured my waist every day.

It turns out I’m pretty good at losing weight because I somehow managed to come home 7 pounds lighter than when I left. At 46 years of age, I don’t think I have ever looked better in my life. But this is just a point in time and not the end. Fifty-two inch shoulders are a long way off, so I’ve got some work to do.

EDITOR’S NOTE

William,

That’s very commendable on your part by continuing to pursue you goals despite some setbacks and hardships.  What’s even more impressive, is that you “Held the Line” for over 5 weeks being out of your normal training and nutrition environment.

Temptation seemed to be in your face with every meal but you had momentum, discipline and tenacity  to carry you successfully across the finish line of AT11.  Were happy that your fitness goals were able to finally crystallize with the proper application of the AGR system.

Congrats again on your transformation and  wish you all the best in your pursuit of becoming “Golden.”

Adonis Spotlight: M&F Feature + Tales from a True Insider

Today’s special post is the latest installment of the Golden Eye for the Adonis Series.   Because it’s Friday and The Goal Is Frequency (TGIF) we decided to superset today with an Adonis Spotlight “Double-Header!”

First and foremost, wanted to drop a “shout-out” to all my brothers’ in IRON for your continued support and encouragement in the pursuit of my Fitness Model Endeavors.  It was just three short years ago that I began to follow the principles of the Adonis Golden Ratio Systems.  Those simple principles of both art and science  have remained the core of my personal training foundation and continue to fuel my passion for health & wellness.

I still remember my first conversation with John Barban & Brad Howard after making the “Watch List” in AT3.  After the interview, Brad H. asked me, “So where do you want to go from here?”  I nervously replied, “I don’t really know, I just really like this program [AGR] and want to run with it as far as it will let me.”  To that response, John simply said, “Well it’s time to buckle down, and throw your hat in the ring; then we’ll see how good you are.”

I’m pleased to announce that thanks to the lessons learned in mentorship from the AGR Founders as well as my contacts within  Fitness Models International (FMI)  and International Sports Sciences Association (ISSA) I was selected as a featured trainer in the November 2013 issue of Muscle & Fitness Magazine.

VTaper: True Insider and One of our Top Bloggers in the Community

The Adonis Community truly is an awesome resource to help answer the questions of those just becoming familiar with the AGR Program.  Veterans of the community are more than happy to lend sound advice and support one another in their journey to “Golden.”

While browsing the community earlier this week, I happened to stumble across the Blog of VTaper and was simply blown away by his content.

Here is a sample blog entry from VTaper that has transformed into a guest post!

The Scale, Lies!!!

In each transformation story, each individual has a progression that takes place and this progression must exist no matter what. The question is, “How does one measure progress? “, and the best way to track this progression is all in the numbers, correct?

Well this is true, but isn’t truly necessary.

Numbers, like statistics, can be skewed and bent, manipulated and, most importantly, misleading. Let’s look at the weight scale as a real life example. This common household weight scale is undeniably the most commonly used device in today’s society to track ones weight from home. This form of tracking is only a single form or aspect of the total progression, known as weight. The problem with only going by this measurement, a scale, in reality does not inform an individual of the entire story; there are simply too many variables and factors, which lead to false impressions. Variables such as water and food amounts.

An even larger reason a weight scale numerical value is unreliable is simple, it does not factor an individuals true body fat. An individual partaking in a fat loss routine, such as AGR, may become displeased, depressed, or just disappointed to reveal he/she only dropped 6 pounds within the month on the bases of just reading the fluctuations of the weight scale, but the question is, “what if , while losing their fat, the individual actually began to gain muscle mass?”

So if the scale lies or is inaccurate, why does one just measure body fat? The answer is simple, unless an individual is getting their body fat tested by a very expensive manner, using a DEXA Scanner, Bod Pod, or by hydro-static weighing, any other way of measurement are simply inaccurate means. An example of this is handheld devices like the Tanita or the Omron scale, who proclaim they measure an individuals body fat, but unfortunately these are inaccurate numbers as an individuals hydration lavel can cause these numbers to fluctuate.

Alternatives to tracking Progress

The following are considered the top alternative methods for an individual to monitor their progress without the use of any tools:

1. Changes in a person’s fitting of Clothing

When your clothes don’t fit anymore, you know you’re heading in the right direction!

Does it really matter what the scale says, if you find yourself buying new (smaller) clothes because the ones you own don’t fit? When the numerical value on the scales never budge for a few weeks, but your clothing start to look like they are XXXL on you, there is no doubt that ones progression is taking place. It means that you simply are gaining muscle as you are losing fat all simultaneously.

2. CHANGES IN PROGRESSION PICTURES
VTaper's Arm Progress pics over 6 Week Period of Transformation

VTaper’s Arm Progress pics over 6 Week Period of Transformation

The greatest and most motivating form of measurement is the photograph! The old saying,”A picture is a 100 words” is never wrong in measuring a individuals progression in weight loss. Taking progression photographs will allow a person, and others, to have a clear visual record of these weight and body changes physically. This has psychological, and in my opinion somewhat, magical, effect as one can literally see the changes in his/her physique, when comparing the images over time. Progression photographs are simple to take and do not require much. Many use a mirror and a cell phone or have their significant other take the pic against a plain wall. The key is to take two photos every 2 weeks, first thing in the morning before consuming any food or water, and just after a workout.

3. MEASUREMENT THROUGH STRENGTH GAIN

Progression is never just about ones aesthetics or physique. A individual should also be measuring his/hers performance in the workouts. When I began my own fitness adventure, with AGR, I was literally, the fat guy who wanted to put on some muscle and lose fat and this was after my trip to Germany and seeing the photographs of myself. I was disgusted. The only way to keep a record and monitor ones progression in strength is by maintaining a workout log. Those with the new smart phones have the ability to use tools like BodySpace, Fitocracy, Cody, FitnessFast. Then some, like myself, just use traditional pen and paper. I then transfer my information to an excel spreadsheet on the computer. Logging your workouts are simply the only means of measuring ones strength over time.

Measure through Lifestyle Changes

Lifestyle changes are the tangible items that one can feel and see everyday, and for a lot of people, this is the ultimate joy and sense of accomplishment. An individual understands they are progressing when…

  • The kids feel light as a feather when you carry them
  • A Person feels better about themself. More motivated and happy.
  • The level of energy is significantly higher
  • Sleep becomes deeper and more relaxing
  • While doing the “honey do” list, the back and legs do not hurt anymore.
  • Using stairs are easier and you are less winded when walking up and down them

There is absolutely no doubt that a persons progression is getting better from their fitness program.

So now what?

Clearly, the Adonis Golden Ratio program, and just getting in shape, is not all about numbers. It may be nice to see the weight go down, but ones satisfaction with that measurement is short lived. Simply strive for a real long term goal that takes very little effort. Let the new clothing, progression photographs, workout logs, and changes in ones lifestyle truly gauge your results, instead of a false and misleading weight scale. It is these that will motivate and make ones self esteem much higher and rewarding in the end.

Hope this helps some of you newer members.

yours in fitness,

Romeo Giovanni aka”VTaper”
